Spanish Immersion

Ø  Kids are learning are everything in Spanish and parents don’t know any Spanish what does it look like

§  Don’t try to learn it or speak it- talk to them in English

§  Read English books

§  Tested in Spanish in Spanish and English – Spanish did as well in English or better than just the kids in English

§  Send the homework home in English

§  Newsletter comes home in English what happens in the classroom and what happens at home

Ø  Student finds learning fun and easy vs. struggle with learning

§  Love School- Love English or Spanish

§  SI is the only thing that is hard is auditory learners

·      Any learning issue will carry over no matter what the language

·      Bilingual C student

Ø  Emotional kids?

§  Support is the same in English and Spanish

§  Portray confidence to your child

Ø  Once one of your children does that guarantee a spot for younger child

§  Preschool in Spanish Immersion they are in the program for life

§  Same process for a 2nd child

Ø  What percentages of kids are in SI?  How to kids relate socially to each other?

§  Started out with 40 in K/1st

§  18/20 in P Now 292

§  One-third are in SI

§  6th graders go to camp – to pull together and get together

§  First class or two going through pave the way

§  Mixed for P.E

§  Recess together

 

Ø  Registration is limited

§  March 9

§  Class list and waiting list

 

Ø  How will the K/1 class progress

§  K/1 split class 14/14

§  1st/2nd 14/14 through 6th grade

§  6th graders join other students

§  5th grade- combination class or small class that year

 

Ø  How do deal with K and 1st graders?

§  Worked great in SI

§  Split for a while and then they merged into 2

 

Ø  Original families take their kids out of the program?

§  2 kids really dedicated to homeschooling

§  Retention rate is incredibly high

§  More in retention in SI than regular school

 

Ø  Blend the grades together or half in 3rd grade and half in 4th?

§  Literacy block time

§  Split all the way through – rotate curriculum

§  Split the students in the same room for literacy and math

§  Curriculum we have right now in English class will be the same in the Spanish classroom
 

Ø  What if the interest is big will be go for two classes?

§  White elephant in the room

§  Enough time to react to the waiting list

§  March 9 to react to the waiting list

§  Maybe

 

Ø  Learning disabilities?

§  Resource rooms

§  We can tell if there is a learning issue in either language

§  Reading can be tricky

§  One on one

§  It is not a cognitive issue it is developmental

§  Reading at grade level in Spanish language they are fine

§  Case by case evaluation

 

Ø  Qualification for the teachers/experience in American curriculum and American schools

§  Every school is unique

§  Native speaker and being a teacher

§  Add a lingua helps with Immersion training

§  Standards for teachers is high – apply, interview, teach a lesson

 

 

 

Ø  Work with families who have kids too old for the family?

§  Diversity enhances everything

§  Encourages other family members to learn languages as well

§  Different is cool

 

Ø  Memory Work/Bible in Spanish

§  Read it in English enough at home and they will memorize it in Spanish too

§  Did not involve son

§  Was not happy at first but loved it

 

Ø  Spanish and then to One To Grow on then K option?

§  Spanish preschool 100% sure that they will go to K the next year

 

Ø  Money? Preferential treatment?

§  No preferential treatment

§  Funding- budgeted for 50 K 50 1st  (in 2012)

§  Preschool intention forms

 

Ø  Fair to limit the class size?

§  Not going to make the decision until after March 9

§  Biblical component and include it in our Christian schools
