Pella Christian's Plan

Beginning in 2007, Pella Christian Grade School began a FLES (Foreign Language in Elementary School) program. Using this model, all students in the elementary classrooms receive instruction in Spanish for 20 minutes, twice a week.

With the goal of increasing the global awareness and language acquisition of the student body, PCGS began offering the first Spanish Immersion program in Marion County. Starting with preschool, kindergarten and first grade, students choosing the immersion track now spend their entire day learning all subject matter in Spanish. Each year we will add another grade to the program as the pioneer class advances. The immersion program will go through eighth grade by the year 2019/20. Starting in third grade, English instruction will be delivered in increasing amounts each year through selected curricular areas.  For example, in third grade, Bible will be taught in English and during that class the teacher will incorporate instruction in the English language skills that do not naturally transfer from one language to the other. As the students enter middle school, they will integrate with the students in the traditional English program but will receive two or three classes each day in Spanish. This maintenance program will serve to further develop their Spanish acquisition and usage.

Parents will always have the option to enroll their child in our traditional English program or in our Spanish immersion program.  We firmly believe that these two distinct educational approaches will work together to help us fulfill our mission of "challenging students to develop their individual God-given gifts for a life of service in God's kingdom."
