Spanish Immersion Intention 2020-21

The Spanish Immersion intention form will go live on Thursday, March 5 and 9:00 p.m.  At that time a link to the intention form will appear below.  To learn more about how to complete the intention form please watch the short instructional video that follows.  To learn more about the Spanish Immersion options see the information below.

Preschool: If your child will be in preschool during the 2020/21 school year, you should follow all instructions regarding Creation Station Preschool registration. This information can be found on our website at http://www.pellachristian.net/Preschool.cfm. Preschool registration will open at 9:00 pm on Tuesday, March 3.

Kindergarten and first-grade registration: If your child will be in kindergarten or first grade during the 2020/21 school year, registration will open online at http://www.pellachristian.net/about/siregis.cfm at 9:00 p.m. on Thursday, March 5.

No. Students who are already a part of the Spanish Immersion program will be given priority in the enrollment process. However, in order to maintain your priority, you must return the intention form that will be sent to you in February. Failure to return this form by its due date (February 28, 2020) will result in a loss of your priority position. This helps us discern how many openings we have for those who are hoping to join the program.

Parents will register their children online. The registration form will open online on March 5 at 9:00 p.m. Students will be accepted into the program on a first-come, first-serve basis with the exception that students enrolled in the Spanish Immersion program during the 2019/20 school year are given a priority position in the program for the 2020/21 school year. Please visit our website at www.pellachristian.net. Under the “About” tab you can select Spanish Immersion, and you will find a short video that demonstrates exactly what you will see during the registration process.

On the Google form that you will utilize to register, you will be asked for your child’s name, child’s date of birth, and child’s grade for the 2020/21 school year. You will also be asked to give the parent(s’) name(s) and an email address.  We ask that parents only register online once. If parents choose to register multiple times we will use the registration that is time-stamped with the earliest time.

The only method of registration will be on the Google form.  We have multiple computers available at PCGS where you can register at any time during normal office hours between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. beginning the morning of Friday, March 6. We would be happy to help you register.  As a reminder, the online registration will begin on Thursday, March 5 at 9:00 p.m for K/1st and Tuesday, March 3 at 9:00 p.m. for preschool.

We encourage you to visit the PCGS website at www.pellachristian.net under the “Spanish Immersion” tab for a short video that demonstrates exactly what you will see during the registration process. The link to the online registration will not be open until Thursday, March 5 at 9:00 pm, so early registration will not be possible. That noted, the link for the registration site will be on the “Spanish Immersion” tab of the PCGS website.

We will enroll 20 students into the Preschool Spanish Immersion class, 22 students into the Spanish Immersion kindergarten class, and 22 into the Spanish Immersion first-grade class.  Priority will be given to those students who were enrolled in the Spanish Immersion program during the 2019/20 school year. All students who are registered but are not initially placed in the Spanish Immersion program will be placed on a waiting list for their respective grade level. After you submit your online registration, you will see that a confirmation screen comes up stating that you have successfully submitted your registration.  By 4:00 pm on March 6, you will receive an email from spanishimmersion@pellachristian.net stating whether your child is on the class list or the waiting list.  We want to work with multiple people to double and triple check the class lists before they are published.  If an opening results in that grade level the next student on the waiting list for that grade will be given the opportunity to join.

Yes.  We will create a new waiting list each year.  Your child’s position on the waiting list from the previous year will not be preserved, so it will not provide any preference or guarantee for a seat in the class for the 2020/21 school year.

Yes.  Students in the Preschool Spanish Immersion program will have priority when registering for Spanish Immersion Kindergarten for the 2020/21 school year.

After much careful deliberation, the Pella Christian Grade School Board determined that siblings of students already in the Spanish Immersion program would not be given priority over any other student. The school board understands that many families think of Spanish Immersion as a family decision and want a similar educational experience for all of their children. The school board decided in October 2011, before the first Spanish Immersion registration, not to give preferential treatment to anyone in order to provide as many families as possible the opportunity to enroll in Spanish Immersion. This decision has been revisited by the school board twice since 2011 and in both cases, it was decided not to give priority to siblings of students already in the program.  In June 2012, the school board decided to give preferential treatment to Spanish Immersion teachers in order to assist in recruiting the best teachers possible. The long term goal of the program is to make Spanish Immersion available for any family who wants it, yet we are not able to offer this option at this time.

Parents interested in the Spanish Immersion program must submit an online registration form no earlier than March 5 at 9:00 p.m. (for kindergarten and 1st grade; please see above for preschool online registration).  Placement into the program will be based on the date and time the registration form is received online.

Yes.  The interest level will be evaluated after the registration date with the waiting list providing significant influence. While finding qualified teachers and space within our building are challenges to opening additional sections, we encourage you to place your child’s name on a waiting list if you are interested in your child being served in Spanish Immersion.

You will not need to pay a fee for any of the Spanish Immersion classes during online registration. There will not be a fee for kindergarten or first-grade students. (Preschool students are asked to pay the registration fee [the first month of tuition] at their parent meeting on April 7 in order to confirm the child’s place in the class.)

Parents of students registering for Spanish Immersion Kindergarten or for Spanish Immersion First Grade will need to complete the registration during one of the all-school registration dates in the summer. The dates and times of these will be published in the spring.  (Parents of preschool students will need to attend a meeting at 7:00 p.m. on April 7, 2020. This is a meeting for all students enrolling in Creation Station Preschool. Failure to attend this meeting will result in forfeiting your child’s seat in the class.)

After research by the Spanish Committee, Education Committee, and School Board at our school, as well as guidance from add.a.lingua, we have decided that the first semester of first grade will be our last point of entry for students without previous experience in the Spanish language. After the first grade year, the students have advanced to a linguistic level that is difficult for new students to reach without negatively affecting their academic growth or that of their classmates. Therefore, we will not be enrolling new students in our second-grade classroom.

Rebecca Gómez serves as our Spanish Immersion Point Person.  Feel free to talk to her at school, or her email address is gomezre@pellachristian.net.  There will also be a parent informational meeting held in the PCGS media center on Thursday, February 13, 2020, at 7:00 p.m.  Parents interested in learning more about Spanish Immersion at encouraged to attend.
